The Greener, Greater Buildings Plan
What is PlaNYC?
In 2007, New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg released a comprehensive plan to strengthen the City’s economy and improve quality of life for all New Yorkers while combating climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the City’s buildings. PlaNYC, appropriately named for достопримечательности Рима its NYC-centric vision, brought together 25 agencies in New York City to take steps towards the vision of a greener, cleaner and more sustainable New York.
Greener, Greater Buildings Plan
To achiever PlanNYC’s sustainability goals, the City has initiated policies and initiatives for higher energy efficiency in existing buildings, renovations and new construction. The Greener, Greater Buildings Plan (GGBP) under PlaNYC is a set of comprehensive measures that target energy efficiency in large existing buildings.
It consists of four regulatory pieces in addition to being supplemented by with extensive jobs training and a financing entity called the New York City Energy Efficiency Corporation (NYCEEC). The regulations under GGBP mandate the following:
- Benchmarking energy and water use of large properties annually (Local Law 84 / LL84)
- Adopting a local energy code (Local Law 85 / LL85)
- Energy auditing and retro-commissioning every 10 years (Local Law 87 / LL87)
- Sub-metering of large commercial tenants and lighting upgrades (Local Law 88 / LL88)
End Goal
By enforcing all regulations under the Greener, Greater Buildings Plan it is the City’s goal that over 10 years these laws will reduce greenhouse has emission by 5 percent, have net savings of over $7 billion through energy cost savings, lower building maintenance costs and, also create roughly 18,000 construction- and engineering-related jobs.
